Shiv Sena (UBT) leader and Rajya Sabha MP MP MP Priyanka Chaturvedi has written to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, urging the Centre to grant Union Territory status to Belagavi amid the long-standing border dispute between Maharashtra and Karnataka.
Leaders from various political parties in Maharashtra, including Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray, had on Monday criticised the Karnataka police action against Maharashtra Ekikaran Samiti (MES) activists who were seeking the merger of Marathi-speaking areas with Maharashtra.
The protest coincided with the winter session of the Karnataka Assembly, which began on Monday at Suvarna Vidhan Soudha in Belagavi, which the MES has been opposing.
